Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman star in this classic romantic drama directed by Douglas Sirk. Cary Scott (Wyman) is a wealthy widow living in New England with her two grown-up children. When she meets Ron Kirby (Hudson), a nurseryman and gardener, she is intrigued by his free spirit and simple life.

The pair fall in love but Cary is afraid of the social consequences of their relationship due to their differences in age and class. Her children and friends disapprove of Ron but ultimately she must make her own choices.
