Mixed Company
An interesting and talented quintet from Jersey City, New Jersey, Mixed Company chose their name because of their mixed nationalities and sex, but also because of their different personalities. Mixed Company, while working steadily in various clubs and shows every week, were determined at rehearsals to conquer these songs that make up a very versatile and exciting album. The selection of material chosen here shows a contrast between the old and the new, country and some down home rhythm and blues. At the time of this recording, Mixed Company had been together for about four years, with this being their first album, although some members of the group sang with Patty and the Street Tones, and another in a gospel group, and Charles "Cada" Brooks whose bass voice can be heard on a Catamount Records album by the group Vintage and also on some older R&B records. The closing song of the album "Goodnite Sweetheart Goodnite" is followed by an outstanding rehearsal performance that unfortunately was unable to make the studio. It features a friend, Terry Ford on lead with Mixed Company, paying tribute to the late great Shep (James Sheppard of Shep & The Limelites) whose voice he idolized. Being a very humble person, he felt he was not talented enough to record, but his professional performance on "Darling How Long" will be remembered not only among his family and friends on this earth but also with Teddy in his final resting place. This classic album of a wonderfully unique singing group was originally released over 60 years ago, and is presented here newly remastered for this exclusive release. .
