As a student of medical history, the author has long realized that classic medical histories ignore physicians who make significant contributions to political, military, literary, artistic or economic history. This volume contains biographical sketches of twenty physicians who made or are, in one case, making significant impacts on history in areas other than medicine: Sun Yat-Sen, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Gertrude Stein, Richard Jordan Gatling, W. Somerset Maugham, Joseph Ignace Guillotin, Thomas Dover, Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, Hugh Mercer, Oliver Goldsmith, Emin Pasha, Sir Leander Starr Jameson, Thomas Clark Durant, William Henry Harrison, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, Jean Paul Marat, John Keats, John Henry Holliday, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, and Franz Fanon. The collection is international with all five continents represented. It is also eclectic, with inclusions ranging from a terrorist, to a romantic poet, to a president of the United States. Nonetheless they all have one thing in common-they studied medicine. Fillmore Buckner, MD, JD, received his BS and MD from the University of Washington, Seattle, and his JD (cum laude) from the University of Puget Sound School of Law. Clinical Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Past President of the American College of Legal Medicine, Dr. Buckner has studied and taught medical history throughout a fifty-year career in medicine. He has held the post of Chair of the Historical Committee of the King County Medical Society for over five years. He has published and lectured extensively in the fields of legal medicine and medical history and is the author of Overview of the History of Malpractice, Graduate Group, 2002 Hartford.
