The Virginal Conception & in Vitro Fertilization
Besem Oben Etchi
Etchi's work is a handy reference for making ethical decisions concerning the use of reproductive technologies for procreation. In several parts of the world, couples without children of their own are exposed to various forms of torment. Over the years scientists' work of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has become a solution registering several millions of births already. Mary's Virginal-Conception-Method evidences an artificial method and not the natural method of conception; a Y-Chromosome from outside the couple; a dissociation of the link between procreation and the couple's unitive sex in conception and the death of Holy Innocents to sustain the life of Mary's Son. Etchi introduces the contributions of Early Church Fathers, Irenaeus, Origen, Tertullian, Hillary of Poitiers who do not find that these elements make the Incarnation to be classified as gravely immoral nor is Mary's Son considered to be lacking in human dignity due to the artificial conception method. Etchi's work uses a case study of infertility of women in Kenya caused by a eugenics plot using vaccines. Etchi's work provides the needed theological update to equip Catholic couples who are charged to make their own ethical decisions as the sacramental ministers of the Domestic Church regarding their intention to use IVF procedures for procreation.
