The year is 1964, and Korea is still at war. A peace treaty has never been signed. The forces of the United Nations and the Republic of South Korea on one side and the army of North Korea on the other are not actively engaged in combat, but they still oppose each other every day. This situation has existed since a truce was signed on July 27, 1953. The fragile truce between North and South Korea still exists today. U. S. military personnel bravely continue to serve in the unique position of being squarely between two opposing nations. They work in an area where one wrong move or one loss of self-control on the part of any person, whether a private or a general, could sever the truce and start both sides shooting at each other once again. INSIDE THE DMZ looks at perhaps the only U. S. military group in the world that performs duty jointly with its enemy. Christopher Washington shares his military experiences in Korea's Demilitarized Zone during 1964 through the eyes of a young, black, American man, keenly aware of where he comes from and what he knows.
