The North Carolina 49th Infantry Regiment was organized in March, 1862, at Garysburg, North Carolina. Its companies were recruited in the following counties: McDowell, Cleveland, Iredell, Moore, Mecklenburg, Gaston, Catawba, Rutherford, and Lincoln. Assigned to General R. Ransom's and M. W. Ransom's Brigade, the unit fought with the Army of Northern Virginia beginning with the Seven Days' Battles. Following Fredericksburg in December of 1862, the 49th was transferred to North Carolina, thus missing Gettysburg and the other major battles of 1863. It returned to Virginia and participated in the Siege of Petersburg, surrendering at Appomattox. Companies Company A - Rutherford County(1st) Co. B, Chatham Cossacks (2nd) Co.
